Guardian's Fishing Fun Day

33 boys and girls recently decended on the Riverside Fishery at Scrooby for the Worksop Guardian Fishing Column's fun day.

Six angling coaches from the National Federation of Anglers were on hand, along with Worksop and District AA representatives and local experts, to offer expert advice and support to all the new-comers and more seasoned anglers alike, and despite a strong wind blowing all day and a torrential downpour at the very beginning of the match, a great day was had by all.

This event was all due entirely to the generosity of fishery owner John Hunt who offered the facilities free of charge for the day and stayed on hand throughout the event. Venue expert Les Richmond was also there, encouraging the anglers and offering tips on how to fish the different pegs.

A complete change in the weather at the beginning of the week saw tempretures drop off, effecting the results on the day with the normally prolific weights the venue is famous for failing to materialise.

However a few quality fish to 7lb 4oz did show and everyone managed to catch at least a few fish and without exception had a wonderful day.

The top weight of the day in the under 16s category fell to 13-year-old Reece Nicholson who landed a Ghost carp of 7lb 4oz in his net of 18lb 2oz from peg eight with Joel Potts leading the way in the under 12s, netting 10lb 15oz off peg 26.

But it it wasn't about winning or losing, the whole day was about just being there and the local youngsters enjoying the atmosphere and the experience.
