Close season still busy for anglers

This week, with the season now ‘closed’, we thought we would let you know all the Worksop Angling Association fisheries that have remained open and any restrictions that are in force.

Mick Pogson and Mick Brunt of Worksop AA have informed us that Sandhill Lake will remain open all year but no keep nets are allowed and of course barbless hooks only, these restrictions also apply to Woodsetts quarry pond which is also remaining open.

The association’s length of the Chesterfield Canal from the Highschool length through to Whit Sunday Pie lock in Retford will remain open with keep nets and whisker barb hooks allowed.

To our knowledge all commercials are remaining open with normal fishery rules applying. If you are aware of any other venues that are remaining open don’t hesitate to contact us.

Through the Grapevine

The spring weather has got the fish feeding on all lakes, but the Sherwood and the Holmedale are really on top form.

Several pleasure nets to 35lb have been recorded on the Sherwood lake fishing pole and pellet, road side pegs have been best fishing no more than 9m out.

On the Holmedale lake pole and pellet and small groundbait feeder and hair-rigged corn have been the best methods and pegs in the 20s and 40s most prominent. But with the temperature rising the shallow island pegs will start to produce.

The Cavendish lake continues its good form for skimmers and roach. A fresh stocking of small carp on the Maunside should bring this pond up to top form.

Retford AA’s second round of the spring series on the canal takes place this Sunday, draw at 8.30am in the Hospital car park.

They are also running open matches every Wednesday on Woodside Lake at Lound starting 6th April, draw at 9am.

Bill at Lodge Farm informs us that the fish are moving about on the two new ponds now that the weather is milder.

On Lily and Long Island Ponds the fish are feeding shallow and wag and mag are worth a try. Also the tench are beginning to show on the Top Pond.

Roger Green of Worksop AA tells us that skimmers are falling to the groundbait feeder with worm or red maggot hook bait on pegs 33 to 61 at Sandhill Lake.

We have heard that Freddy Foster has retired as the bailiff at Sandhill Lake, we would like to wish him all the best for the future.
