Late season run of cod at Skipsea

Well, it is not often I get it wrong but when I (Roger) do, it’s big time.

So, I would like to begin this week’s column by way of an apology.

In last week’s through the grapevine, we reported that Freddy Foster had retired as bailiff and wished him well.

Unfortunately, it is in fact Roger Hayward who has retired due to ill health, so may I extend my apologies to both of these gentlemen over this confusion (I am easily confused!) and wish Roger all the best for the future and Fred a long continuation of his services.

To cap it off, no sooner had I reported that it seems the beach season had come to an end than we receive reports that there is a late spring run of cod to 10lb being caught on night tides at Skipsea.

On a brighter note, I am happy to be able to tell you that Stuart has been extremely busy negotiating with Worksop and District Anglers’ Association along with Retford AA and has managed something of a coup.

To cut a long story short, he has managed to secure adjoining lengths of canal from each association where we intend to run a pairs charity match in aid of the Guardian’s chosen charity the Bluebell Wood Hospice.

At the time of writing, we are still working on the logistics but will let you know the details as soon as we have them finalised. Watch this space!

Through the Grapevine

Over on the Trout Lake at Ranskill, C. Parker had 19 fish, the best a rainbow of 9lb 8oz, taken on green and white fritz using intermediate line.

C. McDonald had 20 fish to 3lb using the cat’s whisker on intermediate line again.

On the Carp Lake G. Jackson had three fish off peg 4 using boilies, the best a 23lb 10oz common carp. The first strip is also fishing well with K. Hunter having 100lb plus of carp, tench and roach on pole fished pellet and corn.

Retford AA midweek open matches begin at Woodside Lake, Lound, on Wednesday the 6th April.
There have been some good weights of bream and tench showing to pleasure anglers with the bream going to 6lb and the tench averaging 3 to 4lb.

Harry Dickinson from Hodthorpe AC informs us that the Stainforth and Keaby canal in Thorne is fishing well with quality pleasure catches of roach and skimmers falling to pole fished caster and bread punch.

The High School length of the Chesterfield canal at Retford is continuing its good form and Mick Pogson enjoyed a good day here but managed to have his hook straightened on two occasions.

Bill at Lodge Farm informs us that the top pond is continuing its current good form with Toni Price and Barry Bagshaw catching 174 fish and 114 fish respectively from pegs 34 and 35.

He also reports that the fish in the two new ponds have spread out more evenly now and all pegs have an equal chance of getting among the action.

Finally, just a reminder that today you must have a new rod licence and you can pick them up from your local post office.
