Youngsters shine

As we have often said in the past, we are spoilt in this area with the number of quality fisheries on our doorstep.
This is reflected in the quality of anglers that this area produces – most of who start at grass roots level.
On Sunday, having no fishing commitments of my own I ventured out to Riverside at Bawtry where Portland School were fishing a match against Shiregreen Junior Anglers of Sheffield.
The dedication of these youngsters has to be seen to be believed.
On the day Portland lost on the overall weight by a matter of a few ounces but managed to secure the two top places with Nile Lilley being top rod with a weight of 3lb ½oz.
Kyle Moore came second with 2lb 11oz and Tom Myers of Shiregreen third with 2lb 10oz.
The match sponsor, John Kemp of Tardis Tackle, had ensured that all competitors received top notch prizes and trophies which can only encourage more youngsters into the sport.
A big thank you must go to angling coaches Ken Stevenson of Worksop and John Kemp of Sheffield and the Riverside Fishery for their hospitality.
