Take care with your hook length

When we started writing this column the one thing we promised ourselves and our readers was that we would report on news and features and not use the column as a forum to preach or moan.
But on this one occasion we would like to pass on a gripe that we feel equally as strongly about.
Roger Green has informed us that two specimen carp have been found dead this week at Woodsetts Quarry Pond due to being tethered by bombs and line.
Mr Green has asked us to point out that hook lengths MUST be weaker than the mainline.
Pretty obvious stuff we would have thought, but obviously not. Roger also asked us to point out that rigs can be checked by the bailiff.
Our commiserations must go to Glentworth securities-backed Gavin Leversidge who finished runner up in the televised Fish O’ Mania junior final at Hayfield Lakes last Saturday.
Gavin weighed 11.3kg to finish just 610g behind Richard Hines of Wigan.

Roger Green informs us that Woodsetts Quarry Pond is still fishing well with a 20lb 6oz common taken from the top car park and with tench coming to pellet and mini boilie and a 3lb 4oz perch that fell to lobworm.
Derek over at Harlesthorpe Dam, Clowne tells us that pole fished pellet is the top method on the large pond with Jamie and Julian of Dinnington taking many carp to 18lb.
Paul Ashley had a 70lb net of bream, roach, tench and perch with the same method taken near the boathouse.
Floating bread fished near the margins was the top method on the small pond especially for the resident carp and chub.
On the coastal scene we have had reports of good catches of cod and ling falling to jigger or bait from small boats at Bridlington, also the mackerel are starting to show in numbers now.
