Change of tactics needed to catch

WELL, autumn is upon us and tactics are having to change to get among the fish – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still great sport to be had in our area.
Roger Green informs us that two of our local waters are really coming on form with Woodsetts leading the way with some amazing pike catches.
Last Friday saw Roy Coupe take a brace of pike in double figures the first weighed in at 11lb 8oz taken on sprat deadbait and the second a fish of 25lb, which fell to half mackerel.
Other notable catches from this water include a pike of 13lb caught by Roger Green on a paternostered deadbait and another of 8lb to Woodsetts regular Alex.
There are also large perch showing with Jason Burgin taking one just short of 2lb on worm and the silver fish are still showing although not in as great a numbers as during the summer.
Roger advises to try small Mepps type spinners as the weather turns colder and plugs for pike. Will anyone fishing for these predators please ensure that you have the correct gear for this type of fishing – forceps, wire traces etc.
On Sandhill Lake silver fish are still coming to pole lines at six and eight metres in the deeper water but don’t go mad with the groundbait.
Pike are also starting to show with an average three runs per day with fish between 4lb and 13lb being taken.
Also as an alternative you have the option of heading to the coast and trying the beaches along the Holderness coast, which have really come to life with some excellent bags of whiting falling to anglers from this area, although we haven’t heard any reports of significant catches of cod yet.
To top it all off the mild weather has meant that all the local commercial waters are still producing good weights and there are a number of winter leagues that have either started or are about to resume.

CLUB RESULTS
Worksop Piscatorials visited the Chesterfield Canal at Clayworth where gale force winds made for a difficult days fishing making it nearly impossible to hold the pole.
Ivor Jones managed a respectable 5lb 13oz of bream and roach on pole fished red maggot from peg one.
Terry Evans put 4lb on the scales for second from peg 9 with Mick Pogson a close third with 3lb 12oz off peg 11.
The members of the Greyhound AC fished their latest match on the RHP section of the Newark Dyke on Sunday 23rd October.
They found the Dyke a couple of feet up showing a tinge of colour and took full advantage to net 60lb of roach between them.
Alan Sargeson dusted off his stick floats to weigh 13lb 11oz from peg 4 feeding and fishing caster.
John Evans also employed the stick float on peg 6 to weigh 8lb for second place with Chris Brailsford a close third with 7lb 8oz from peg 9 also taken on the stick.
Worksop AA fished the fourth round of the Angling Times Winter League (Trent Division) on the Beeston Canal where the team came second on the day to the Diawa Trentmen.
Worksop are just holding on to top position in the league with nine points as the Trentmen are one point behind in second and Middy Matchmen third on 13 with two rounds to go.
There were three section winners on the day being Mark Pressley, Phil Green and Gordon Smith with Mark claiming second place overall with an impressive net of 14lb.
The fifth round is to take place on the Fossedyke Navigation on Sunday 13th November. Well done lads and good luck for the last two rounds.
The Inter Parish Team Challenge match took place at Lakeside last Saturday where five teams representing Anston, Dinnington, Wales, Thorpe Salvin and Woodsetts battled it out.
Individually Dennis Bateman took the honours for Thorpe Salvin with a weight of 15lb 5½oz from peg 4 fishing the wag and mag.
In second place Kev Smith of Wales managed to land a foul hooked carp on peg 17 weighing 9lb 9½oz with Tony Britton with 5lb 9oz from peg 10 for third place.
The Dinnington team of Christine Allsop, Jeff Clarke, Ray Clay and Tony Britton won the team event on the day two points clear of Wales.

LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
Last Wednesday’s visitors were the Royal Oak AC and Simon Osbourne took the honours with a weight of 41lb 6oz from peg 28 using pole fished caster.
On Sunday Jay’s AC of Langold held their match and Neil Broadhouse was the top rod with a bag of carp and silver fish weighing 38lb 5oz from peg 36 using pole fished caster.
Neil Hoyle took the runners up position with 31lb 14oz from peg 14 with column contributor Brian Garsden taking third place with a level 26lb from peg 26.
On the Strip Lakes Dave Stevenson took an 80lb net of carp, goldfish, skimmers and roach in a pleasure session using pole fished caster and bronze maggot.
The Carp Lake is still producing plenty of fish in the 20s with Carl Edwards landing six fish to 24lb 8oz from peg 3, his hookbait was mainline fusion boilies.
Steve Jackson caught five fish the best a common of 22lb 6oz from peg 6.
Over on the Trout Lake Jeff Smith netted a monster rainbow of 19lb 4oz in his 14 fish bag using cats whisker and intermediate line.
Mark Sanderson of Worksop landed 16 fish this time on pink fritz and intermediate line.

LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
The Vale AC of Bolsover fished their latest match on Long Island last Saturday where Daz Newman fished pole and pellet on peg 92 to take a winning net of 41lb 10oz.
Keith Stacey weighed 18lb 9oz to take second position from peg 94 with Paul Elliot third from peg 86 with 17lb 3oz.
Also on Saturday Junction 31 AC fished the Top Pond where Roy Hanson fished pole and maggot to take a skimmer and tench bag of 31lb 6oz from peg 34 for top position.
Malc Thompson netted 24lb 10oz for the runners up position from peg 37 with Cliff Raynor landing 11lb 12oz from peg 35 for third place.
On Sunday Mick and John’s winter series took place on Lily Pond and Brian Poole was top rod with a weight of 52lb 5oz employing pole and paste on peg 70.
Shane Moore was second with 16lb 11oz from peg 55 with Steve Royale making up the frame with 13lb 10oz from peg 52.
Hodthorpe AC were also at the Scrooby venue last Sunday, this time on the Top Pond where Mick Pickwell ran out the winner with 16lb 12oz using pole fished worm on peg 34 with a net of skimmers, tench and perch.
John Bleackley took second place with 6lb 9oz from peg 37 with venue regular Mick Peddle taking third position with 5lb 8oz from peg 31.

HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
The Daiwa Hallcroft Juniors match on Saturday 22nd October saw winner Sam Mumby fish pellet at 8m from peg 5 to catch mainly stockie carp in his catch of 22lb 9oz on Croft Pool.
Second was Richard Drage (14lb 4oz, peg 1) and third was Tom Roberts (11lb 14oz, peg 15).
Saturday’s match in the Daiwa Hallcroft Tournament League on Moat Island was won by Lee Hewison at peg 40 fishing meat and pellet at 12m to catcheight carp and a few skimmers for a 32lb 12oz catch.
Second was Ken Pacey (29lb 15oz, peg 14) and third was Jamie Masson(28lb 15oz, peg 8).
Sunday’s match on Moat Outer was won by Jason Skipper who fished pellet over ground bait to catch carp and skimmers for 52lb 9oz at peg 14.
Second was Gordon Gibson (38lb 7oz, peg 32) and third was Arnie Payling (30lb 1oz, peg 87).
Monday’s match on Bridge Outer was won by Lee Hewison, with a 40lb 3oz total after catching on meat at 13m from peg 44 for mainly carp to 6lb.
Second was Geoff Bennett (35lb 12oz, peg 17) and third was Phil Morgan (34lb 11oz, peg 14).
Tuesday’s match on Moat Island saw Ken Pacey take top spot after fishing corn over pellet at 7m in blustery conditions to catch an all carp net weighing 47lb 6oz at peg 48.
Second was Ian Temple (43lb 12oz, peg 44) and third was Lee Hewison (38lb 15oz, peg 30).
Wednesday’s match on Moat Outer and Island was won by Ian Littlewood at peg 33 on the Outer and fished pole and pellet at 13m to take carp to 5lb for 41lb 8oz.
Second was Ray Abbs (35lb 6oz, Island peg 67) and third Gary Hazlewood (26lb 10oz, Island peg 64).
Thursday’s Daiwa Hallcroft Veterans Match on Moat Outer was won by Arnie Payling who had a biteless first two hours.
But when the fish did turn up he caught regularly for the remainder of the match fishing pole and pellet at 9m from peg 21 Arnie for a 46lb 12oz total including carp to 6lb.
Second was Harry Barton (43lb 4oz, peg 12) and third Dave Sewell (33lb 4oz, peg 39).
Friday’s match on Moat was won by Luke Sears who fished maggot with ground bait feeder from Island peg 49 to take 15 carp and a couple of skimmers in a 70lb 3oz catch.
Second was Jamie Masson (65lb 7oz, peg 26) and third was Rich Teigh (53lb, peg 32).

SHERWOOD ROUND-UP
The wind and rain made for a difficult match on Holmedale Lake on Sunday but owner Mick Langton just came out on top fishing pole pellet and meat feeding a small pot of pellets every put out ending with 16 carp – 9lb for a 64lb 12oz total from peg 26.
Second was Neil Wilkinson (63lb 15oz, peg 17), third Simon Langton (63lb 12oz, peg 32) and fourth John Darby (62lb 2oz, peg 50).
Round three of the Winter League on Cavendish and Maunside lakes on Saturday was won by Steve Shepherd.
He fished pole chopped worm and caster at 14m to the far bank and once he had a 12oz chub on the first put in, he never looked back weighing in over 30lb of chub – 1lb and 15lb of small carp – 2lb for a 45lb 8oz total at peg 7.
Second was Geoff Bennett (34lb 11oz, peg 9, Maunside) and third Craig Brazier (30lb 15oz, peg 1, Cavendish).

THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
All members of Worksop and District Anglers’ Association are reminded that the AGM takes place at Manton Miners’ Welfare, Retford Road on Thursday 17th November starting at 7pm.
There is another match in the carp and silverfish winter series at Diawa Hallcroft tomorrow.
