Dealers donate prizes

IT HAS been a hectic week with preparations for the upcoming Guardian Charity Open match but, as ever, our local tackle dealers have come up trumps donating some fabulous prizes.

We can’t list everything here due to lack of space but our heartfelt thanks go to Stuart of Go Baits at Langold, Ken Ward Sports, Greg of Angling Supplies, Retford Road, and Geoff of Gateford Angling.

The interest that has been generated in this match has taken us by surprise and at the time of this article over half the pegs have already been pre-booked, so if you are interested, book early to avoid disappointment.

As a prelude to the match we went to Lodge Farm on Saturday to suss things out (see Stuart’s match report).
After walking the silver fish lake and chatting to the members from Shireoaks who were enjoying a club match, we offered our services to fishery owner Bill and bailiff George with the weigh-in on the new lakes.

As you can see from the match report, the winning weights were awesome, but also worth noting were the back up weights, with loads of double figure catches.

Winter fishing is generally notoriously hard and that’s why I (Roger) concentrate on the beach fishing at this time of year, but these weights were more reminiscent of a summer match with Stuart and myself helping weigh in roughly 300lb of fish!
So everything is set for a week on Saturday - just keep your fingers crossed the weather is kind and we can make this a day to remember.

Through the Grapevine

We promised ourselves that we are not going to go off on any moral crusades and restrict our reports to fishing.
But - and it’s a big but - we have to comment on the amount of dog muck on the canal towpaths.
Anglers get a lot of bad press regarding litter but this is nothing compared to what the dog walkers leave behind.
So, next time you see a dog owner gazing in to the distance while his or her pet does its worst close to your tackle, don’t sit there and say nothing - make your point.
That’s my moaning done, promise not to go down that road again - just don’t let me get started about the idiot cyclists...

Mick from the Sherwood Forest Farm Park informs us that he will be running the Spring Pairs League again this year.
The top prize is a week’s holiday at White Acres for the October Festival.

Stuart at Go-Baits informs us that Langold Lake is fishing well for bream, skimmers and roach, particularly pegs 39 to 48 and 13 to the boat house.
The method to use is groundbait feeder with maggot flouro pinkie or worm hook bait with match weights going to 24lb. For more information contact Stuart on 01909 540105.

Linda at Lakeside of Ranskill tells us that the trout lake is fishing well with J. Johnson of Worksop taking 11 fish on assorted flies and floating intermediate line.
J. Dawson had 16 fish to 12lb using buzzers and floating line. She added that the match lake is fishing well with winning weights over 30lb to pole and maggot
